My first thought whenever my traffic spikes unusually is, ‘Uh oh, I wrote something stupid and someone noticed!’

Back when the blogosphere was smaller, that happened sometimes; now I take comfort in knowing there are so many blogs that I can be stupid in my own corner without drawing attention.

(By the way, I’m glad that Daypop thing sent you some traffic. I keep waiting to get flamed for manipulating their rankings. If only I knew how!)

I’m glad you’re getting a bit more readership- your site primes my mind to write and think in a random-connectedness. I hope more people enjoy your imagry and thought.

But, stats aren’t everything. :)

hanks to Steve over at One Pot Meal, The Encyclopedia ended up on Daypop’s Top 40. I’m all sure it was some sort of mistake; Steve’s sure of it too (at least based on what he wrote recently). It inflated the hits here which made me think of how scary it is when more than the modest number of people that normally frequent this site start taking an interest.

I’m fairly comfortable with how things are now but I wonder if I would freak out if there were suddenly a lot more of you peering through the grimy windows at the debris I leave here. Does it become less of a journal and more of a zoo exhibit, a weird cage with an even weirder beast pacing around inside?

Of course, everyone tells me, ‘Stop looking at the stats,’ but now it’s like I can’t help myself. I bet I’ll encounter a number there sooner or later that will either be too high or too low which will send me into some kind of amusing panic.
